This year's Easter Egg Hunt took place on Monday 1st April.
We were hoping for better weather after heavy rain caused last year's event to be held in the village hall, and the dry conditions which greeted us on Monday morning certainly seemed to be an improvement. After battling with awnings and erecting tents in the freezing cold wind on the playing field, however, we were no longer so sure!
Fortunately the cold did not deter a hardy crowd of villagers from coming along to make the most of a fun-filled afternoon. The event started with some drumming from Eliza, which warmed us up and raised our spirits. A variety of activities for all ages had been skilfully planned by Peter and his team. For the under 5s (or was it 5 and under?!) there was a Hunt for items of interest which could (possibly) be found on the playing field, such as daisies, dandelions, a purple flower, something beginning with 'B' (no, not Barry!). When the correct objects had been collected in a bag this could be handed in in exchange for some chocolate. The older children had a vast array of sporting activities to complete, such as hockey, football (dribbling between strategically-placed cones), egg and spoon (the egg being a mini chocolate egg which, I believe, could be eaten upon successful completion of the activity), obstacle course and space hopper race. When they had had a go at all the activities they could present their ticked-off sheet and be rewarded with...yes, you guessed it- chocolate! Some children, in their efforts to win yet more chocolate, completed each activity two or even three times, and seemed to enjoy themselves nearly as much as the Friendly Society members supervising them, who were also seen to have a quick go themselves when no-one was looking. Tea, coffee and hot cross buns were being served in the tents, which provided some welcome shelter from the wind and allowed the adults to have a go at the fiendishly difficult Easter quiz- even the eventual winner didn't quite manage to score half marks!
The afternoon culminated with the prize giving ceremony for the best Easter hats/ bonnets, decorated eggs and pictures. Numerous eggstremely annoying egg puns were issued by the judges, who declared the standard to be eggsemplary. In total £36.66 was donated.
Many thanks to everyone who participated, to the judges, and to all the Friendly Society members and other helpers who helped to set up, organise the activities and pack away.
