| 2012 Wassail |
| Wassail: Saturday 14th January. A relatively warm, still and above all dry night was really welcome. The stage was set by a bevy of helpers, floodlights put into position, tents erected with fairy lights, mulled cider and mulled apple juice set to warm and apple cakes baked ready to welcome the 60 or 70 who came for this year’s Wassail celebration. Four orchards were visited to represent the orchards across the Village and were traditionally Wassailed – toast hung in the branches, cider poured around the tree, the King and Queen circling the tree several times and the Westbury Wassail song sung accompanied by small band and finished with a shot gun volley to ward off any evil spirits. All this was ably directed by the Green Man who ensured traditions were upheld. On the return to Old Ditch Farm more mulled cider was available and the Langport Mummers put on their traditional play ‘St George and the Black Knight’. This was followed by hot soup, sausages, cheese and French bread and the burning of the Ashen faggot bound with three bands of bramble. Everyone both young and old enjoyed a festive evening appreciating the apples and orchards and sense of Community such an event is about. Thanks to the many involved in making sure the event went smoothly especially our hosts Mick and Buffy Fletcher, Andrew Buchanan as m/c, the Green Man, John Finch sorting the electricity and the many others of the Westbury Friendly Society involved in setting up and clearing up afterwards. |
