TSUNAMI FUND-RAISING EVENTS

COFFEE, HOPPERS AND BRING & BUY

Head chef Mick Fletcher
cooking hoppers

Thanks to the generosity of those who attended, the Coffee Morning and bring & buy sale at Medlar House on Monday 3rd January raised a total of £2,030.04.

There were many wonderful cakes donated which, with loaves of Jasmine's bread, sold 'like hot cakes'.

The kitchen was buzzing with conversation over coffee and hoppers, cooked by Mick Fletcher (above),. They are a cross between a crepe and a crumpet, and tasted delicious dripping with melted butter and honey.

Buffy sat and sold raffle tickets so well that she completely missed out on the hoppers, and we were all spurred on by Simon's running total displayed on the laptop. A big thank you to our helpers - Janet, Nicky, Annie, Shirley, Jo, Elizabeth, Jon, Verity and Ray, and to everyone who came, bought, sold and donated.

The money has been donated to Merlin, and to an appeal being held by a school in Sri Lanka with contacts in badly hit areas. They have organised the provision of cooking equipment and utensils, as well as school books, paper, pens, etc., for two badly damaged schools in the south east of the country.

A TASTE OF SRI LANKA

A memorable Sri Lankan dinner in the village hall on 22 January raised almost £1,000  towards the Tsunami appeal.  Barbara Calverley,  Janet Fisher, Sue Isherwood and Buffy Fletcher provided five authentic Sri Lankan curries and a range of accompaniments.  Sue, wearing a traditional sari, explained a little about Sri Lankan cuisine and Peter Bright showed slides taken while working in the country recently.  He also explained how some of the money would be channelled directly to local self-help groups, and how some Westbury people had aspirations to forge a longer term link to aid development.

Particular thanks are due to those in local shops who gave us the generous discounts that supermarkets never offer:

F. Griffiths Butchers for the meat
The Good Earth for spices and pulses
Julian Graves for nuts
Hartleys also for spices
Kevin the fishmonger in Wells market for tuna

And not forgetting Buffy’s 3 little ducks for their major contribution to 60 portions of crème caramel !

The recipes from the successful fundraising dinner are now available from the village shop price £1.00 or by post from Barry Lane, 2 Glencott, The Hollow, Westbury-sub-Mendip, Wells BA5 1HH  price £1.50.

The recipes and illustrations were selected from the following books by Janet Fisher, Buffy Fletcher and Sue Isherwood and thanks are offered to the authors and publishers.
