The Book Exchange Celebrates 2 years

This year's picnic for residents in The Square celebrated two years of The Book Exchange.

BT feature our Book Exchange in latest 'Adopt a Kiosk' campaign

Along with a mini art gallery in the North Yorkshire town of Settle, and lifesaving defibrillators in various locations throughout the country, our Book Exchange is featured in the latest BT promotion for the conversion of old red telephone boxes.

August 2009. How it all began

Orgainised by Andrew Buchanan, the residents of The Square enjoyed a tea party on August Bank Holiday Monday. On a beautiful afternoon, chairs, tables - some with posh cloths,  tea services and home made cakes were wheeled out and set  beside the old disused 'phone box. Some of us who couldn't wait for the sun to go down over the yard arm brought alcoholic beverages.

Jan Fisher & Bob Dolby officially open a Book Exchange in Staplehay, near Taunton
Staplehay, on the outskirts of Taunton, comes under the jurisdiction of Trull Parish Council. Like ourselves Trull PC had purchased the phone kiosk from BT.

The decommissioned kiosk stood empty in The Square – a focal point in the conservation area of the village of Westbury-sub-Mendip, Somerset. The question: “What can we do with it that will be of value to the community?”
"That one's got legs" by Nicky Venning

A few weeks ago I parked my car in The Square, on the way to Westbury Society Archaeology. The renovated phone box looked great. Newly cleaned, lots of books. Maybe this was something for the Wells Journal.

And the BT National winners are............

The winning entries in the BT competition were announced on Monday 7th December.

Sadly, we were not winners, but we did receive a BT special award of £500 for our community based entry.

Villagers will be asked for suggestions on how this money could best be used to benefit their village community. After considering this, the Parish Council will decide on how the £500 will be spent.

World Wide Whirlwind

Bob Dolby is our Parish Councellor who's brief was to find a use for the decommissioned BT box in The Square.  In his wisdom, he decided to keep a diary of events and this is it.  It is a work in progress - he never knows when the next request from the world media will arrive.

We will add to the diary as events occur.
